Grand Hazard: The Game

Grand Hazard is a gambling game played with 3 dice from which the game Chuck-a-Luck evolved. In the United States the game is sometimes mistakenly called “Chuck-a-Luck”. Grand Hazard is sometimes known, especially in casinos, just as Hazard, but it should not be confused with the considerably older European game of Hazard, from which the dice game Craps evolved. Grand Hazard is also closely related to Sic Bo. Many people who enjoy playing Sic Bo for real money also enjoy gambling at Grand Hazard. So if you have ever tried and enjoyed the ancient Asian game of Sic-Bo, then you should try Grand Hazard for real money too.

Grand Hazard is actually a banking game which developed in Wild West frontier saloons and which is still played in some casinos as a side game. Three dice are used. The casino or operator provides a layout that shows the pay-off system and rolls the dice, either from a cup or with a special hazard chute.

Playing Grand Hazard

Playing Grand Hazard is not a difficult skill to master. Players simply place their bets on the outcome of the three dice that are rolled by the House. Pay-offs are usually ‘for’ rather than ‘to’ which means the bank keeps the stake bet by the player and 30 for 1 means that the player really wins 29 to 1. Note that the high, low, odd and even bets do not pay if made as three of a kind and it is this that gives the House the edge on these bets. Three of a kind is known as a "raffle."

Grand Hazard Bets

The six dice faces at the top of the table pay like the game of Chuck-a-Luck. A bet placed on one of the six dice faces pays evens (1 to 1) if one die shows the specified value. It pays 2 to 1 if two dice show the specified value and 3 to 1 if all three dice show the specified value.

The numbers around the edge of the layout pay if the dice totals the specified value. High bets pay if the dice totals 11 or more and Low bets pay if the dice total 10 or less. Remember High and Low don’t pay with raffles - three-of-a-kind. The payoff for throwing 3 of a kind is 180 for 1.
